What is "Seeking Alpha"?
Q. I know someone that is an author for 'Seeking Alpha'. He briefly explained to me what it is, but I still don't quite understand. Maybe one of you could help me out? Here's their website if this helps at all:
Asked by Jess - Sun Apr 27 22:28:15 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. It's basically just a clever name for a website that gives advice on investing in stocks. Over the past several decades the rate of return on the market (S&P 500) has been about 10%/yr. Seeking alpha is attempting to seek a return higher than the overall mkt. If you made 15% investing in a stock and the market returned 10% then Alpha is 5%.

Are there "alpha and beta females" among girls just like there are with men?
Q. In every group of guys, there is one guy who is more charismatic, confident, and successful - he is the alpha and the other guys are usually the betas. They will laugh at his jokes, rely on him to decide their plans for the evening, and even seek his approval in their decisions in life and dating. It's strange, but it happens... Does this happen with women?

A. Sorry but we don't take part in "Pump & Dump" schemes here. Very few "micro-caps" ever make a run of it. The big winners of the past 50 years such as IBM, Microsoft & Wal-Mart were never micro-caps. They all had solid financials and unbeatable business models that resulted in the stratospheric gains for their shareholders. FYI, TMY has been on a long downward slide for over a year. There's nothing in that stock's numbers that tell me it's a wise investment. They're involved in oil and gas exploration in an unstable part of the world (Kazakhstan and southern Russia) and have had some problems with the Russian government. Given the current political tensions between the US and Russia I wouldn't be betting the ranch on this one. I… [cont.]

Alpha Kappa Alpha Graduate Membership?
Q. Hello, I recently attended a rush at my university for consideration to become a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc, but I was not selected for membership. Although I was not selected, I still have a desire to join this prestigious sorority and give all I have to the community. I would like to know how do I best go about seeking membership on the graduate level? I will be graduating in a month so undergraduate membership is no longer an option for me. I know the process of seeking membership is quite different for graduate than undergrad. I sent an email to the president and vice president of the graduate chapter in my area, inquiring about upcoming events, but received no answer. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated. :)

Sources on female species being more prone to infidelity?
Q. I'm looking for a topic to do my 10-20 page research paper on for school. I remember seeing something on t.v. a few years ago that said the female human species is actually more genetically prone to infidelity than males. I thought this was interesting since most people think it's actually males. You know how in other animal species there's one or the other that has been scientifically proven to be so? I think it said that in most animal species it's actually the female, and the same with humans. I want to find sources (if any) to support this. I have other topics in mind, but I'm narrowing it down. I think it would make an interesting paper if so. If it's true, my argument would be that along the way, over centuries men and society… [cont.]

A. Almost no species form bonded pairs against which there could be an infidelity. Humans are not one of these, and monogamy and fidelity are convenient and happy fictions. There are only four species on the Earth that do bond, and they include the beaver, the painted shrimp, and the gibbon. These never, ever, in any observed behaviors, exhibit any infidelity once the pair has joined. Among hedogogically organized primates (of which we are one type, along with monkeys and gorillas), the typical behavior is for one alpha male to attract most of the females. When they are in estrus, they behave in a way that we humans would consider to be "slutty", to use your words (humans no longer experience estrus). They are largely ignored when not in… [cont.]

Asked by Recen-B - Wed Jul 29 13:57:25 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Yes, unless the candidate qualifies for membership through legacy status. Apparently, you haven't done your homework because THAT information is on the Sorority's website (the link is below). Membership at the graduate level is by invitation only. That means that an active member of a chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha must recommend you for membership to her chapter and she will serve as your mentor during and after the membership intake process.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Event Question?
Q. Hello. I want to ask any members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. this question. I will be attending an event soon sponsored by the Graduate chapter I am looking to seek membership within. My question is, I do not know any of the members and I am extremely nervous about attending this event alone. I tend to be a shy person so I am not sure what to do or how to interact with other's at the party. I know this event matters a lot because two Members know of my interest and I am sure they are looking for me to be there. I just don't know how to mingle with the rest of the chapter Members. Would anyone out there help me with some words of encouragement or advice as to how to carry myself alone at this event? Should I approach other women?… [cont.]

A. I think you picked a very convoluted situation to try and pick up the value on. What has happened here is that you had an IPO, and then several other classes of common converted to new Class A shares at different ratios. The financial statements to date aren't showing the number of shares after conversion, although there is an SEC report that points the way. It appears that people are using information either before conversion, or not counting the converted shares, thus arriving at the wrong answer. Given the convoluted nature of this transaction, I can't say I blame them. The SEC filing below sheds some light. There are 446.6 million A shares outstanding from the offering. That appears to be the number that NYSE and Zecco are… [cont.]

Has anyone else seen anything like this new trading website?
Q. I've found this website from an author on Seeking Alpha, Dr. Kris from MIT - she has developed a really interesting item called the SMC analyzer on her website stockmarketcookbook.com.. .it puts together Modern Portfolio Theory and several market timing oscillators - seems she prefers the CCI - in regard to properly allocating assets. I've been involved in markets for many years and fund managers have never shown that they can effectively time the markets. Maybe they should take a look at it, since this seems to be hard math and there is no 'human' element to louse the results...Has anyone else ever seen MPT combined with effective timing oscillators?

Your NEO (BHO) is speeding things up!?
Q. Prediction one. The twenty-five-year equities bubble pops in 2009. U.S. and foreign equities markets will stop treading water and realign with economic reality. Stock prices will cease to reflect the greater fool mentality and will return to being a function of dividend yields, which have long been miserable. The S&P 500 will sink below 500. In a bid to stem the panic, the government will enforce periodic stock market holidays , and will vastly expand the scope of its short-selling prohibitions eventually banning short-selling altogether. Prediction two. With public pension systems and tens of millions of 401k holders virtually wiped out and with the Baby Boomers retiring en masse there will be tremendous pressure on the government to… [cont.]

Alpha Kappa Alpha Rush?
Q. What is actually need at the rush. I know you need two letters of reference. Im getting one from a long time member aka, and I wanted to get one from a professor I used to work for, but I just found out he was a Alpha, is it ok to get a letter from him or should I seek someone else. Also on pre-check list on the national website (aka1908.com) it said that general information for the collegian brochure should be secured from graudate advisor. Is it ok that I contact her and kindly ask for the general information or is that a bad idea

A. Hello BB! Here is a link to the pre-rush checklist: This form will inform you of what is needed for rush. Here is the link for the undergraduate membership interest form: In regards to the Alpha, it is okay to get a reference from him. I suggest that you wait until rush for the general collegian brochure as it will be given to you at that time. Best wishes in your endeavors to become a lady of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated! Sincerely, Sweetpea

Q. Winston Salem State newest AKA's? Winston Salem State University? Greeks-AKA's Your Question Alpha Kappa Alpha Winston Salem State University ? The Winston Salem State University Chapter was supsended for 5 years for serious hazing related reasons. They very recently chose 70 girls interested in joining their organization. The chosen ones paid a lump sum one day and five days later were made AKA's. Never heard of anything like this. Others will have to wait a few weeks and will do the same. They are trying to get as many on campus as they possiblly can. Keep in mind over 350 attended the interest meeting. So they had quite a few to chose from and lots of time to decide. There was no need to hurry. Of those selected 50% + had 2.9 GPA's… [cont.]

A. Since you have posted the same question on multiple occasions I will post the same answer! I don't really understand the question, but i can say that i was at the rush and did not get accepted. Through process of elimination i kind of know who was. and almost all of the girls that got in were in the program of the honors convocation from last school year so I know that they have 3.0 or better. You never know what these girls do outside of campus. I wish them much luck in life and their service. p.s. most of the girls are leaders on campus. I guess you will see when they all decide to come out. I am not questioning your membership, but a true lady of ALpha Kappa ALpha would keep her concerns within her organization and not publicize them… [cont.]

Dominance / Pack Leader/ Alpha?
Q. Why isn t establishing yourself as the alpha to your dog(s) one of the main priorities. To me it seems like it doesn t get as much thought as it should. When you establish yourself as the leader your dogs will follow your orders and rules more and wont play up because they know you are boss. If a dog sees and knows there is no leader he/she will seek dominance and then you will have a dog that it hard to train etc etc. The reason I say this is because I am sick and tired of seeing people walking there dogs out in public and them literally being dragged along , and them doing what there dogs tell them not the other way around. Do people think its wrong for there dogs to be at the bottom of the leader pyramid because I Know that my dogs… [cont.]

A. To the man who said alphas don't use force.. then what do you call it when a dog bites someone for oh let's say taking their spot on the couch? These dogs are in control they have learned how to control people and be the dominant force. Alphas are benign and calm leaders but they will use force when necessary.. using force all the time desensitizes that is why the aplha reserves force for when it is really needed. For example my mom is a near perfect alpha.. she is benign, doesn't use force, doesn't use threats, and controls the food resource.. but that is exactly why when she does use force, the dogs respect her. Once my dog and hers got into a fight on accident, someone left the door open and they started fighting. My mom came up and… [cont.]

Ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, inc., please help me!?
Q. First and foremost, I would like to thank you for taking time out and answering my question(s). I am currently a junior at a university which has an AKA chapter on campus but I am more interested in seeking membership in a graduate chapter once I graduate, because I'm almost finish with school, so I want to dedicate 100% to my studies. What be the best way to meet grad chapter members? How do I make my interest apparent using discretion? Should I begin to attend grad chapter events now even though I still have 2 more semesters of undergrad? I understand that grad chapter is invite only, so ladies is there any advice you can give? **P.S. For those of you who may see my profile name, its a fake identity LOL**

A. I think because you have 2 more semesters in undergrad that you need to continue to focus on your undergrad years. Yes, you can attend grad chapter events and get to know those members, but don't sell youself short at the ugrad level. You can still give 100% if you are chosen to become a member for the time that you remain in school, then you would just transfer to a grad chapter. At the grad level, its' by invitation only and it will take a while for you to get acquainted with members, as a ugrad you may meet some grad chapters members you never know. As a member who joined a grad chapter, the grad chapter will know that you are interested when you continue to attend their events and introduce yourselves to people, trust me you don't… [cont.]
