What is the best/cheapest moving company in the metropolitan area?
Q. I am looking to move a couch, living room table, a few chairs, a rug, and various items to an apartment in NYC. 96th and Lexington to be specific. What is the best moving company for the job? What is the cheapest company for the job?

A. Subscribe briefly to Angie's List. It'll be worth your while. They surely have one in NYC. There, you'll get real comments from real people and ratings of companies. I wouldn't take the advice of anyone who posts a name as it may be self-serving in these economic times. Here are some free cites w customer ratings Good luck!

Which moving company is good to use for moving accross state?
Q. I have checked with Penske and Uhaul. Penske seems to be cheaper than Uhaul, but I would like to get answers from someone who has actually used a company and was happy with their sevice and price. We are moving from Ca to Ok. and not towing anything. Thanks, and Merry Christmas!

A. Well, I have had to rent from both Penske and Uhaul. Larger moving vans. Trips were over 1500 miles one way. I rented them to move a relative. By far-Penske has the better trucks. Kept in good condition. And their customer service is superb. Not discounting Uhaul-just had much better experience with Penske. Happy Holidays

What should I do if a moving company gives me the run around regarding my claim for lost, damaged items?
Q. I purchased insurance for lost/damaged items and submitted a claim. No adjuster ever came and the moving company owner told me that he is "self insured." Everytime I call, I am told that they are "working on it." But nothing more than lip service. The lost/damages totals about $15,000. The moving company is in California.

A. That is bad news. I am no expert, but I have heard that it's really difficult getting this kind of issue resolved in your favor. Not trying to bum you out, just maybe be prepared for a fight.

How much should it be to hire a moving company?
Q. I am curious to know how much a moving company charges to move all my stuff from a 3rd story apartment with no elevator to a house roughly 5-10 miles away. I just want to know if it's worth it to pay someone so it wouldn't be so difficult to move. Thanks!

A. My mother-in-law just told me the other day how costly it was to move half way across the US. She has 2 bedrooms, a small kitchen and small living room. It was over $5000 for her but that included everything-they packed everything up for her, moved it hundreds of miles then unpacked and placed everything where she wanted at her new place. Since you aren't moving very far it would be safe to say it would be much less than my example but $1000 or more to do the whole thing-pretty reasonable. I used to work in retail. I got moved around a lot but did the work myself. I hated it but I'd hate spending thousands of $$$ even more for something I could easily do myself.

How much should I ask the moving company to compensate me for their mistake?
Q. My moving company sent my shipment to the wrong location and now I will receive my stuff much later than the date it supposed to arrive. They asked me to give them a reasonable estimation of the 'cost' due to this mistake. I have legal documents, clothes, household stuff in the shipment. This is a 750lb oversea shipment by air. How much is reasonable?

A. What did the delay actually cost you? $10, $100, $500? That is what is reasonable.

A. Invest the time in doing as much research as possible. Many people have been taken advantage of...charged too much money...contents arriving late...stuff missing or damaged. Don't take a quote over the phone, have a representative from the moving company come to your house to measure and take inventory, then come to an agreement. Many times this representative is just a sales person who is paid a commission on what they sell you and won't have anything to do with the move. Get at least 3 to 5 references and follow through by calling them. Here are a few web sites on moving tips: www.state.nj.us/lps/ca/pr ess/movingtips.htm (read this) Wish you all the best in finding a reputable company and that your move will go smoothly.

A. Well, pay-per-call is a recent up-and-coming marketing strategy. You can google that. Maybe Craigslist. Have you tried Craigslist? How about putting up a video on YouTube? I hear some people are experimenting with that. If people want to know you, you can show them the quality of your work with a video. It gets your business attention, even if it is not localized. Then use the response from that video and use it as a reason to put an article on the newspaper regarding business practices or something. Or do something for the community, even if it's just a rally to help an organization. I don't mean give things away, but become involved in the community. This is one of the things I cannot stress enough. Businesspeople are in the… [cont.]

How much will it cost to hire a moving company?
Q. I will possibly be moving approx 50 miles away and wanted to know about how much it would cost to hire a moving company? It would basically be everything I have; living room set, bedroom set and the remainder of my items. I don't have any interest in doing it myself as many of the items are just far too heavy for me to move. I am trying to get a general idea for budget purposes. Many thanks!

A. 50 miles is a local move. You would need to find a local moving company that will charge you by the hour. Check out this website, it has a lot of useful info: www.losangelesmover.org 50 mile move with 3 movers and a truck should not cost you more than $80-$100 an hour. It also important to know the size of your household. 1 brd usually 3-4 hours min, 2 brd 5-6 hours 3 brd 8+ hours. If you wanna save money find a reputable local movers, big companies will give you flat rate, but it will be 2-3 times MORE expensive.

Anyone know of a good moving company?
Q. I'm going to be moving from CT to AZ in the summer. The amount of stuff we need to bring with us would match up to less than a studio apartment. The only big things are a couch, small dresser, tv stand and a huge ass tv. We are also planning on bringing two cars with us. We've been looking at moving rates and it seems that renting a truck/hiring a moving company would cost around $1500. Does anyone have any advice on how to do it cheaper or even ship one of the cars pretty cheap? Thanks!

A. You can go to realtor.com and do a search for homes in your area that are for sale. Most likely these people will be moving soon, even if their home doesn't sell. I know that when I put my house up for sale I started getting letters from attorneys that offer services in the closing of the home, so they must get that from somewhere public. You can also team up with a realtor, like networking; you refer people to him/her and the he/she can do the same.

Q. Me and my friend helped a woman move from one apartment to another. The apartment were like 3 streets away from each other. It was a 1 room apartment with only moving a sofa, full size bed. a small 1 person sofa,2 small tables, 3 chairs ,and like 30 different size boxes. The apartments were both in the 3rd floor and no elevator. She gave us 100 dollars, but we just were wondering what would it cost if she would of hired a moving company?

A. moving companies in Dallas at least have a minimum charge of like 150 . most charge 75 dollars then like 65 dollars for each additional hour.. if it's on the third floor it is extra.. if the walk from the parking lot to the apartment is far it is extra.. so yes she would have paid like 250 maybe.. but honestly it was 100 dollars worth of work but moving companies overcharge on small moves so that they can under charge on large moves..
