I am interested in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. How should I go about seeking membership & how does Rush work?
Q. I am very interested in joining Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and want to know what steps I should take in pursuing it. I know that they hold a Rush but what steps should be taken prior to that? How many community service hours or campus organizations/activities should a student have if they want to be seriously considered for membership? How long should one expect to show interest before they will be seriously considered for membership? (One semester, a year, etc.?) And as far as recommendations and the required forms are interested members supposed to have those forms ready *on* the day of the Rush or is the Rush when they tell members what forms they will need? Also I have reviewed the basic history that I have been able to find but… [cont.]

A. You may want to view other questions on this site related to AKA. Please adhere to what the International website says for prospective members to do. Have good grades. Have ample community service. You should attend events that your prospective chapter hosts. You should look at the documents listed on the national website. No member will be able to tell you how many communtiy service hours will be appropriate. Just think about it like this...If you were a member how much service would you want to candidate to have. If you are serious then that may have already been noticed. To know when the forms are due please see the 'Pre-Rush Checklist' and the prospective chapter will be better able to answer your questions. View all of… [cont.]

How will I go about getting an Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. sponsor?
Q. As I am doing my research on Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. I was wondering what was a sponsor and how do you go about getting one? Does the sponsor have to be a member of the sorority? Could it be the same person that writes your recommendation letter? Would I need a sponsor? I would greatly appreciate any feed back. I am extremely interested in Alpha Kappa Alpha and am trying to learn as much information as possible about the sorority without being a member. Once again all answers are appreciated.

A. A sponsor has to be a financially active member of the sorority. If you are seeking membership in a graduate chapter then yes you would need to sponsor. A sponsor is someone who knows you and thinks you would be an excellent addition to our sorority.

Q. If there s not a Local Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Graduate chapter in my area, should I approach a current member about joining? I current have a 4.0 GPA.
Asked by Karen - Tue Jan 5 13:31:57 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If there is no chapter in your area, go to the national website to find the chapter closest to you. You show your interest by attending events open to the public. If they don't have a website or if they do and it's not updated, you can find out about events by checking the newspaper, radio, word of mouth or fliers posted in shopping areas or community centers.

Expressing Interest in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc?
Q. Hi, I am a student at the top HBCU and I am very interested in joining Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated. All of my life I have been told to be discreet and to not tell anyone that you want to join. At my school, the Members want you to set up a meeting with them and express interest formally. Should I do this? Or is this a bad idea?
Asked by TooPretty - Thu Nov 13 15:45:32 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I assume that since you said you are "a student at the top HBCU," you must be at Hampton!!! Any place else is only second best. :-) What the members are asking you to do TOTALLY violates our current procedure for membership intake and is inappropiate activity...and they know it! No matter how innocent it seems, it's hazing! In fact, the Sorority's website states "MIP [Membership Intake Process] activities in the name of the Sorority prior to Rush are prohibited." The Rush is where you will formally make your desire for membership known, not in privately orchestrated meetings! The Undergraduate Membership Interest form states, "Hazing may include, but is not limited to: attending unauthorized rush meetings or sessions; removing… [cont.]

Ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Sorority, Inc. how to I stand out amongst the other expressed interests?
Q. I have expressed my interests to a couple members of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Sorority, Inc. on my campus. I am familiar with the other girls, but I do not know them personally. I am unsure how to approach them and express my sincere interest. There are also other girls that have expressed their interests to all of the girls. How do I stand out amongst several other young women all striving to be apart of this illustrious organization? I also plan to compete in the Miss AKAdemic pageant, which I hope will really show my interest to these ladies.
Asked by Lovely - Thu Dec 18 22:24:46 2008 - - 2 Answers - 1 Comments

A. The best way to stand out is to be active on your campus so my sorors can see you. Community service is key to becoming a member of AKA. Also, don't feel the need to tell every soror that you are interested. Pick one or two members. Don't worry. . .it will get around. Also, attend any open events that they have and ask to participate, if possible. Hope this helps.

Would joining Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority my senior year (undergrad) be looked down upon?
Q. Most prospective members of sororities/fraternities pledge their sophomore and junior years of undergrad. Would there be a lessened chance of the members accepting my membership into their sorority if I am classified as a senior? I would prefer members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. to respond. Thank You!
Asked by Angel A - Thu Oct 1 15:33:15 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Angel, this is a good question that I think a lot of people have, so thank you for asking. When I was an undergraduate, we wanted to know why seniors waited so long to apply for membership. You may want to answer this question in your letter. Where I come from, chapters are small and freshmen and sophomores had the chance to experience neodom and then spend a few years solidly contributing to the chapter. Chapter members will essentially be making a grad soror if you come in in the spring and graduate a month or two later. They will not benefit from your gifts and talents. That said, while they probably wouldn't bring you in by yourself (too much for too little), putting you on a line with other people would be no "skin off their teeth." [cont.]

What are the requirements for a student joining a sorority(Alpha Kappa Alpha) if you are a transfer student?

Asked by cocodivine04 - Fri Aug 17 20:06:36 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. As a transfer student you must have at least one semester in which you were enrolled "full time" (at my school it's 12 + hours) as well as at the very least a "C+" GPA, although your College/University might require a higher GPA. So pretty much you would be allowed to attend Rush when you are in your second semester at your school.

Is it possible to join the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority in graduate school?
Q. Hi, I have always wanted to join this prestigious sorority because of all the philanthropy that the sorority does. I am currently a First Year Law Student in the UK, and realise that the Greek System is not used over. I just want to find out if it would be possible for me to become a member after Law School, and during my further studies back in the US. Any feedback is appreciated. Thank you.

A. Yes, but membership in a graduate AKA chapter is by invitation only. If you are interested I would suggest getting to know active (very important) members in the area on an individual basis. It may take a while but there is no open process in graduate school. You will need to find a local graduate chapter. www.aka1908.com .

A. You've research all the info that you need for an inspirant. Here's a little more info you could use for the interest meeting: What should be in an interest letter: 1. The letter should be one page in length. 2. It should tell us why, specifically, you believe that you should be offered membership. 3. It should tell us what you have to offer the sorority. 4. It should give us an explaination as to why you want to be a member of our sorority. 5. You can leave out some of the more obvious things, like what school u attend. 6. You should approach writing it like you are in an interview; think of some of the questions that would matter to the the interviewer (above mentioned points) and answer them in the letter. 7. The letter should open… [cont.]

Below is the link to the national website where you will find a detailed description of what constitutes hazing as well as a link to my organization's hazing complaint form. Yes, your name will be on the complaint form. Alpha Kappa Alpha takes incidents of hazing seriously and each matter is investigated. Do Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority look at your Institutional GPA or overall GPA if you are a transfer student?
Q. I transfered schools and it has been a big debate among friends whether or not AKAs look at just your GPA of the school in which you are applying for membership or does your 2.5 GPA has to come from your overall GPA of the two school?
Asked by daloveable1 - Mon Oct 27 09:21:52 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Alpha Kappa Alpha requires a cumulative GPA of C+, so all your grades will be averaged together. Your GPA and status from the semester immediately prior to your application for membership must also be a minimum C+/ full-time status. Keep in mind that your university may also have a requirement for GPA and credits earned.

A. Be patient. It is not a quick process. Assuming that you were not the only rush attendee, all of the documents submitted by all of the candidates for membership to that chapter must be reviewed by the Graduate Adviser (or committee). The chapter members will then vote for a slate of candidates compiled from whom they have a complete application package. What is even more time consuming is that the documents for all approved candidates for membership are shipped to the Sorority's International Headquarters, in Chicago, IL, and thoroughly scrutinized. Believe me, a forged transcript is always caught, so review can be a painfully slow process. Keep in mind that the Headquarters processes ALL undergraduate new membership material in… [cont.]
