How important is it for members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. to know a prospective member?
Q. I am extremely interested in becoming a part Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. however I am extremely shy when it comes to meeting new people. I attend the majority of the chapter's events but I am too scared to talk to current members. Could this effect my chances of becoming a member?
Asked by Miss Indepenent - Mon Oct 26 23:11:49 2009 - - 1 Answers - 1 Comments

A. I am a member that doesn't talk a lot either, and I became a member, and not every member of Alpha Kappa Alpha is a social butterfly. Some people are more reserved and tend to keep to themselves and there is nothing wrong with that. Do your best in becoming acquainted with members, and stayed involved in your community. If its meant to be then it will be. Good luck.

Q. I am very interested in becoming a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha. I understand everything that needs to be included in my interest letter, but I'm not sure as to what format to use. Please help (preferably members of AKA). Thank you in advance!
Asked by Simply Me - Tue Apr 8 14:59:34 2008 - - 3 Answers - 2 Comments

A. 1. The letter should be one page in length. 2. It should tell us why, specifically, you believe that you should be offered membership. 3. It should tell us what you have to offer the sorority. 4. It should give us an explanation as to why you want to be a member of our sorority. 5. You can leave out some of the more obvious things, like what school u attend. 6. You should approach writing it like you are in an interview; think of some of the questions that would matter to the the interviewer (above mentioned points) and answer them in the letter. 7. The letter should open you up to the chapter members

A. As an undergraduate interest, I rushed Alpha Kappa Alpha and was chosen to become a member; however, it is a different process for students who have obtained their bachelor's degrees. Entrance into Graduate Chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha is by invitation only. Here is some information from our National Website: Process The Sorority's official graduate Membership Intake Process (MIP) is by invitation only through one of our local graduate chapters and may not be solicited. Chapters host public events, such as forums, cultural presentations and social activities, which you may wish to attend in order to become acquainted with Sorority members and their community service activities in your area. I am interested in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. How should I go about seeking membership & how does Rush work?
Q. I am very interested in joining Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and want to know what steps I should take in pursuing it. I know that they hold a Rush but what steps should be taken prior to that? How many community service hours or campus organizations/activities should a student have if they want to be seriously considered for membership? How long should one expect to show interest before they will be seriously considered for membership? (One semester, a year, etc.?) And as far as recommendations and the required forms are interested members supposed to have those forms ready *on* the day of the Rush or is the Rush when they tell members what forms they will need? A. You may want to view other questions on this site related to AKA. Please adhere to what the International website says for prospective members to do. Have good grades. Have ample community service. You should attend events that your prospective chapter hosts. You should look at the documents listed on the national website. No member will be able to tell you how many communtiy service hours will be appropriate. Just think about it like this...If you were a member how much service would you want to candidate to have. If you are serious then that may have already been noticed. To know when the forms are due please see the 'Pre-Rush Checklist' and the prospective chapter will be better able to answer your questions. View all of… [cont.]

How will I go about getting an Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. sponsor?
Q. As I am doing my research on Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. I was wondering what was a sponsor and how do you go about getting one? Does the sponsor have to be a member of the sorority? Could it be the same person that writes your recommendation letter? Would I need a sponsor? I would greatly appreciate any feed back. I am extremely interested in Alpha Kappa Alpha and am trying to learn as much information as possible about the sorority without being a member. Once again all answers are appreciated.

A. A sponsor has to be a financially active member of the sorority. If you are seeking membership in a graduate chapter then yes you would need to sponsor. A sponsor is someone who knows you and thinks you would be an excellent addition to our sorority.

Asked by adrianne_diva - Sat Aug 30 22:27:47 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Start off by visiting the national website at Learn the history, founders, incorporators, national platforms, national presidents (past a present) and all other info on the site. If the chapter at your school has a website, become familiar with their history and charter members. If you haven't started on your community service, start now. Although we only take the community service you've done 2 years prior to the formal rush, we look at what you're doing in community. You never know whom you're helping or working with. Attend the functions the chapter holds on campus. Also, make sure your grades are above a 2.5. Alot of chapters require a gpa higher than what the national office requires. A. Graduate membership is by invitation only, and many chapters do not respond to solicitations. I would not recommend attempting to contact them again since you did not receive a response the first time. If the chapter has a website, visit it for a list of upcoming events that are open to the public. Members are everywhere. You may know one at work, at school, or in other social settings that you frequent. The best you can do is to continue to check for events, and be yourself. If you have any friends from undergrad who are members, they may also be able to give you information about programs.

A. Yes, you can if you feel its okay for you and you won't be steesing out. I am not a member, but I have many family members and friends whom are and quite a few joined as undergrads and had children at the time and afterwards. But what I will tell you is that my fam and friends at times had to make choices, and sometimes it was okay for them to bring their child with them to an event, and some times I noticed that they would just elect to not fully participate in an event due to them having a child. I must say that they all are strong women and did what they had to do, and some told me that they felt the members respected them more for showing dedication by still bringing their child (of course to age appropiate events) and showing up. … [cont.]

A. Undergraduate Membership Requirements: Matriculation as a full-time student where the campus chapter is located; or matriculation as a full-time student in a school in the community where a city chapter of undergraduate status is located; Completion of at least one successful grading period (or a defined by the university) as a full-time student at the institution where application is made; A cumulative average of C+ and semester average of C+ immediately prior to submitting an application for membership. Expressing Interest in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc?
Q. Hi, I am a student at the top HBCU and I am very interested in joining Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated. All of my life I have been told to be discreet and to not tell anyone that you want to join. At my school, the Members want you to set up a meeting with them and express interest formally. A. I assume that since you said you are "a student at the top HBCU," you must be at Hampton!!! Any place else is only second best. :-) What the members are asking you to do TOTALLY violates our current procedure for membership intake and is inappropiate activity...and they know it! No matter how innocent it seems, it's hazing! In fact, the Sorority's website states "MIP [Membership Intake Process] activities in the name of the Sorority prior to Rush are prohibited." The Rush is where you will formally make your desire for membership known, not in privately orchestrated meetings! The Undergraduate Membership Interest form states, "Hazing may include, but is not limited to: attending unauthorized rush meetings or sessions; removing… [cont.]

A. There is certainly no age limit. YOU may personally want to consider waiting, however. If your school has many 'non traditional' students (employed full-time, married, single parents, over age 23, etc.) then it is likely that the chapter does as well. If the majority of the chapter members or students at your college are younger, it may be preferable for you to become a member of a chapter after you graduate. If you are 29 then you are aware of the differences between 19- and 20- year-olds and yourself. Your priorities and responsibilities will likely be different. The types of activities that you wish to participate in may be different. Members of a graduate chapter will range from those immediately out of college to those who have… [cont.]
