Members of Alpha Kappa Alpha: What do you need to do to become a member?
Q. I love everything it is that Alpha Kappa Alpha stands for. Im kind of confused about what you have to do when you pledge. I understand you need community service. How long do you need to attend your University? What is a RUSH? What GPA do you need? Also what is the difference between grad and undergrad? Does undergrad mean that you still attend the university?

A. How do you "love" everything Alpha Kappa Alpha stands for and you don't even know what RUSH is? If you "love" Alpha Kappa Alpha then you would know there is no pledging! If you so-called "love" Alpha Kappa Alpha then how come it does not seem you have even "glanced' at the national website? If you did you would know the answers to your questions. Perhaps you should become educated before you start asking questions in regards to my sorority to a public Q/A board. How do you love an organization you're not even a member of? To derdaktari OR the person who answered below me: Your answer does not apply to Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. Your answer applies to predominately Caucasian Greek organizations. What do you ask an member of alpha kappa alpha when your expressing interest?
Q. I have began to show interest and speak to the lovely ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. at my school. It is a bit nerve racking, because I'm very unsure about what I should be asking or trying to obtain... not a protocol, but just some general casual conversation guidelines.
Asked by soquestionABLE - Thu May 27 17:20:49 2010 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Just beee yourself! lol Thankfully, you already have a lot in common since you're in school together. Where might you meet a sorority member? Class? Talk about the class. A sorority event? Talk about the event's topic. A football game? Talk about the game. In other words, forget sorority affiliation and just get to know the members as people. Stay away from any topic that concerns the sorority and DON'T give anyone the impression that you're trying to get (or obtain something). All you need to do now is find out whether these are women you want to be in very close contact with for the remainder of your college years and be affiliated with for rest of your life.

Is It ok to write a letter of interest to Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority prior to an interest meeting or rush?
Q. To any member of Alpha Kappa Alpha, i just needed a few sound suggestions in regards to the appropriateness of writing a letter before an interest meeting or rush even take place. I go to school where there is not a chapter on the campus, but there is a city wide chapter. Also, most of the members attend another school that is apart of the city chapter.
Asked by Angelchic11 - Sat Feb 14 16:49:05 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. There's nothing wrong with getting a head start on a letter. Appropriateness comes into question depending on what you plan to do with the letter once it's complete. If you plan to send it to the president of the city-wide chapter, that should be fine. However, understand that you may or may not receive a response. If you do not receive a response, I would find it inappropriate to continue to attempt to contact the chapter. Once you have made contact, they have your information and will contact you if they are able to assist you.

I am interested in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. How should I go about seeking membership & how does Rush work?
Q. I am very interested in joining Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and want to know what steps I should take in pursuing it. I know that they hold a Rush but what steps should be taken prior to that? How many community service hours or campus organizations/activities should a student have if they want to be seriously considered for membership? How long should one expect to show interest before they will be seriously considered for membership? (One semester, a year, etc.?) And as far as recommendations and the required forms are interested members supposed to have those forms ready *on* the day of the Rush or is the Rush when they tell members what forms they will need? A. You may want to view other questions on this site related to AKA. Please adhere to what the International website says for prospective members to do. Have good grades. Have ample community service. You should attend events that your prospective chapter hosts. You should look at the documents listed on the national website. No member will be able to tell you how many communtiy service hours will be appropriate. Just think about it like this...If you were a member how much service would you want to candidate to have. If you are serious then that may have already been noticed. To know when the forms are due please see the 'Pre-Rush Checklist' and the prospective chapter will be better able to answer your questions. View all of… [cont.]

Why does Alpha Kappa Alpha have three graduate chapters in Washington DC?
Q. I was wondering if anyone could explain the differences between Alpha Kappa Alphas three graduate chapters in DC. I was interested in finding out more about DC's graduate chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha and supporting some of their programs and events but then I found out that they actually have three of them and I didn't understand why or how they differed, so I wasn't sure which one I should look into.

A. Initially Xi Omega was the first chapter in D.C and the area just expanded to three chapters. Rho Mu Omega being the last one in 1988, which is my chapter. Xi Zeta Omega is the other chapter. We work together on many projects and are not as separate as it seems. You can check out the websites and/or attend functions just to see which chapter fits you best. Each chapter all over the world is different, but we don't profess that one is better than the other. The D.C. area is a very big area and Sorors join the chapter that they are most comfortable with. Feel free to visit www.rhomuomega.org to check out my chapter in particular.

But what I will tell you is that my fam and friends at times had to make choices, and sometimes it was okay for them to bring their child with them to an event, and some times I noticed that they would just elect to not fully participate in an event due to them having a child. I must say that they all are strong women and did what they had to do, and some told me that they felt the members respected them more for showing dedication by still bringing their child (of course to age appropiate events) and showing up. … [cont.]

A. I would suggest contacting the chapter officers (if the website lists them) and just expressing that you are interested in learning about events open to the public in the near future. This is not soliciting membership, but rather a sincere effort on your part to "be in the know" of what events and programs that they are having so that you may support their efforts. Also, utilize people who are in the area, some chapters just have a "word of mouth" tradition and that may be your most valuable tool? Are you volunteering in the community and attending church. What should a letter of interest to a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc entail?
Q. How should I format the letter so that I can make it straight-forward yet detailed? What details about myself or the sorority do I have to include? Is it ok if I write them a letter of interest via facebook? If any members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. help me with this I would be greatly appreciated. Respectfully, RegalVirtuous
Asked by regalvirtuous09 - Sat Apr 19 13:50:22 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. 1. The letter should be one page in length. 2. It should tell us why, specifically, you believe that you should be offered membership. 3. It should tell us what you have to offer the sorority. 4. It should give us an explanation as to why you want to be a member of our sorority. 5. You can leave out some of the more obvious things, like what school u attend. 6. You should approach writing it like you are in an interview; think of some of the questions that would matter to the the interviewer (above mentioned points) and answer them in the letter. 7. The letter should open you up to the chapter members. I wouldn't suggest sending an interest letter over the internet. You include it your application.

A. If there is no chapter in your area, go to the national website to find the chapter closest to you. You show your interest by attending events open to the public. If they don't have a website or if they do and it's not updated, you can find out about events by checking the newspaper, radio, word of mouth or fliers posted in shopping areas or community centers.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Graduate Membership in Los Angeles?
Q. I am interested in membership into Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, on the graduate level. I am relocating to Los Angeles in August, and I don't know anyone in the community. How can I go about meeting the ladies of the various chapters? What would be the best method for contacting local chapters? Is it appropriate to call, send mail, or email?
Asked by Interested - Tue Feb 16 23:38:24 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. The best thing to do is to go online to www.aka1908.com and find links to the graduate chapters websites in L.A. From there you can see if the chapters have any upcoming events posted that the public can attend. Please do not call, mail or email chapters to avoid soliciting membership.

A. The best thing to do is to go online to www.aka1908.com and find links to the graduate chapters websites in L.A. From there you can see if the chapters have any upcoming events posted that the public can attend. Please do not call, mail or email chapters to avoid soliciting membership. Remain active in your community by becoming part of other volunteer projects/organizations that may interest you. Good luck.

I would like to become a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority inc.?
Q. I too have questions about becoming a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha. I completed my undergraduate degree and I know I would be an excellent asset to the sorority. I have a great career with a wonderful company. Also, I am heavily involved in the community. While I was in college I wasn't ready but I always new Alpha Kappa Alpha was the sorority for me. Now that I have been out of college for over 15 years I realized that my GPA was a 2.3. Let me know if my GPA is to low for consideration.

A. Please refer to www.aka1908.org. Unfortunately, the minimum gpa is 2.5 and up. Even if you were invited, your transcript would be reviewed and you would not be allowed to join. Best regards . . . (excerpt from www.aka1908.org) Graduate Membership Requirements: * Completion of at least a baccalaureate degree with a cumulative average of at least C+ or a graduate degree from an accredited senior college/university; * Motivation and ability to promote and extend the policies and programs of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. Process

I plan on joining Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. in the near future. How do I research my school's chapter?
Q. Research, research, research. I've been doing a lot of research on Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. I was wondering how do I find out more about my school chapter? (Gamma Tau)

A. I'm not a member of that chapter. But read as much available info about the sorority and try to find the chapter's website. Most chapters put up flyers of their events on campus message boards, etc. Also, make sure you get involved in other organizations or clubs. This would be a great chance for you to meet some chapter members as well, because a lot of sorority women are already involved in other organizations before they cross and continue to be active afterwards. Goodluck!

Alpha Kappa Alpha-How do I become one?
Q. I want to know how I would pledge in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. Does anyone know exactly how or have any tips?
Asked by Simply Luvlee - Fri Jul 20 23:44:08 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments
A. You have to be in school fulltime and have a qualifying GPA. You should contact the chapter at your school and request information. If you do not have a chapter at your school then you're out of luck. You will have to wait until graduation and join an AKA grad chapter.

Does anybody believe it is possible to be fat and be in a fraternity like kappa alpha psi or omega psi phi?
Q. I do know that the stereotype to be in kappa alpha psi is to be a "pretty boy" which i do consider myself. But I am also what some people would call fat or chubby. Do fraternities look at this aspect?

A. Cause you're a guy it probably won't matter too much. As long as they deem you able to attract girls

When Potential Alpha Kappa Alpha are online, Does everyone cross over?
Q. I've notice when looking at my school Alpha Kappa Alpha,INC Chapter there are usually a large amount of girls online and at probate shows, but when you review the members info for that line there are about half of the ladies names listed. My question is, During the "come out" shows are all of the ladies new memebrs? Or is there a mixture of new and old members to disguise the new members until reveiling time. How does that process of being "online" and the probate show work?

A. There is no 'on-line' that term is associated with pledging which was banned by the NPHC in 1990. There is an official Membership Intake Process (MIP) that candidates participate in after official notification from The Sorority. The presentations that you speak of are coordinated by the chapter at that particular campus therefore they organize how that show is done. There may be a nixture of new Sorors and old Sorors, it is at that chapter discretion.
