I want to become a member of a graduate Alpha Kappa Alpha chapter, but I don't know anyone. How do I do it?
Q. I have a lot of friends who are members, but none of them are in a graduate chapter. I have a lot of community service, my GPA is great, and I am so ready to be given an opportunity to join. What do I do when you don't know anyone?
Asked by Nena - Sat Nov 21 09:20:22 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Do your best to form relationships with members who may work with you, attend your same church etc. In addition many of my sorors are members of other community service related organizations. If you have done a lot of community service then it should not be too hard meeting members. The key is to build a relationship with them, and not solely because you want to become a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha but because you have common interests and goals.

Is there a graduate chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha affiliated with the University of Phoenix?
Q. I have currently enrolled in a masters program at the University of Phoenix, I have been interested in learning more about Alpha Kappa Alpha and would just like to know if there is any chapter at this particular university. Thanks in advance

A. You do not need to be in Graduate school in order to obtain membership into the sorority. You need to have completed your bachelors degree from an accredited university with a C+ average. If you did not finish your bachelors with a C+ average, then you will need to have completed your masters from and accredited university in order to obtain membership. I am not sure if the University of Phoenix applies you would need to find out this information on your own. Graduate membership is by invitation only, so you will need to find what chapters are located in your area. Try to attend as many events as possible to get to know the Sorors in your area. Also, it is important to be active in the community, you never know when you might run… [cont.]

Is it harder to join the Alpha chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha?
Q. I am a rising senior in high school who is planning to attend Howard University. I have done lots of research on the sorority. People have said that you have to be a legacy or knw someone really well to join. I just wanted to ask members could there be any possible truth to this.

A. Every school has it s own nuances, so the Alpha Kappa Alpha experience will differ from campus to campus. The problem with schools like Howard is the NUMBER of women who seek membership. If the school has placed a limit on yearly membership intake (and I don t know for sure if that is the case), candidates for membership who qualify for legacy status WILL be accepted first, regardless of who the other candidates know. This reduces the chances for otherwise eligible women, period! I understand this was the case at Hampton (The real hu! go pirates!!!...oh, I digress I m sorry!) recently, and it does have a yearly limit. :-) And yet, I remember that back in 1993 or 94 (pre-legacy), when Alpha Chapter was returning from sanctions,… [cont.]

A. Every school or city has a chapter. For example, since the first chapter was started at Howard University, their chapter is Alpha Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha. Start off by going to and learning the history of the sorority, talk to members of the sorority, and do your own research.

Q. I live in Las Vegas and would like to attend events being sponsored by the graduate chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Inc (Theta Theta Omega chapter). A. I would suggest contacting the chapter officers (if the website lists them) and just expressing that you are interested in learning about events open to the public in the near future. This is not soliciting membership, but rather a sincere effort on your part to "be in the know" of what events and programs that they are having so that you may support their efforts. Also, utilize people who are in the area, some chapters just have a "word of mouth" tradition and that may be your most valuable tool? Are you volunteering in the community and attending church. I would like to believe that both of these avenues will undoubtedbly lead you to a member sooner or later :) Also look in local newspapers and even look for flyers in public places (e.g [cont.]

A. The best way for you to check the status of a chapter is by either going to the akpsi.org website and looking up the chapter or calling the office. They're super nice and will give you an answer right away.

A. Yep, it's possible. I am not sure of the exact steps you have to go through... but you have to petition the main chapter and the chapter you want to be a part of. They do it all the time. Also, if you decide to go to graduate school, you can pledge graduate wherever you go.

How do I join Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority while an undergrad, when school doesn't have an active chapter?
Q. My school currently doesn't have an undergraduate chapter for Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority (suspension) and was wondering if there is anyway to join another chapter while being an undergraduate? I have been very interested in joining, and was communicating with our current chapter recently when they were put on suspension. I really want to join as an undergraduate, is there any other way for me to that? Thanks!

A. Dear aspirant, I apologize, but there isn't a way for you to join Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. if your school's chapter is currently under suspension (inactive). Hopefully, they won't be under suspension for a long time. Q. Is there another method for me to become a member of the Sorority if I attend a college/university that has an inactive chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority? A. No. If your campus chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is inactive, it is not possible for you to become a member of the Sorority at this time.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Graduate Chapter?
Q. I'm interested in becoming a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha through graduate chapter. I am aware of the process and requirements, but I understand that the chapters do not like being solicited. I've contacted chapters for information about public events, as well as checked calendars that are open to the public. Needless to say, there are none. How can I go about politely requesting information so that I become more acquainted with the members?

A. I too am on the same quest that you are. The advice I have received and that has worked out for me is to actually ask a member of the graduate chapter you are trying to gain membership into. You would be surprised how many people that you know are members and you have no idea. I had a mentor that I had known for several years and I had no idea she was a member until she had an Alpha Kappa Alpha shirt on one day. That is the best route I have seen and has been the most successful for me.

A. I would advise to look for that information through the student organizations office at your school, or the graduate advisor for Alpha Kappa Alpha at your school, or a website for the chapter. Many Black Greek organizations particularly at HBCU's only have a spring intake. Protocol TIPS: Please refrain from using the letters "AKA" when making refereces to the sorority, as some sorority members may not look highly upon you doing so. Terms such as "Lines" or "Pledging" are no longer used within the sorority so please refrain from making making references using those terms as well. Alpha Kappa Alpha has a Membership Intake Process (MIP). Good luck.

A. Membership in a graduate is by invitation ONLY. Requirements for membership are located at www.aka1908.com. Be proactive in your community, and become acquainted with the members of my sorority in the chapter in your area. Good luck to you. I would advise removing your picture from your profile, as any lady interested in membership in Alpha Kappa Alpha should be discreet.

A. This is a really common question, but here goes (again): Membership at the graduate level is by invitation only. That means that you need to KNOW an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha who will recommend you to her chapter for membership and serve as your mentor during and after the membership intake process. Your showing up at events will get you noticed (probably not in a way that you'd desire), but may not get you any closer to membership unless and until you have cultivated a relationship with a member. We recommend our friends and family: people we actually know (not know of), not just seen around or share a common work space. The best way I can sum this up: to be one you need to know one. When the chapter has events, more… [cont.]

Why was the Alpha Kappa Alpha chapter at Dillard university suspended?
Q. I really need to know because i wont go to dillard if there are no AKA's
Asked by chinesefoodruleZ - Fri Mar 2 00:15:31 2007 - - 2 Answers - 1 Comments

A. The information about why the chapter was suspended can not be released. Maybe you can ask (in an inconspicous manner) people at Dillard, yet they may not know the truth. You should not select a school based on the presence of a sorority. The purpose of college is to gain education and not pledge a sorority. Who knows the chapter may be active again before you graduate, so then you will be ablt to attend RUSH. Despite the undergraduate membership, there is graduate membership as well. Please consider what college you want to attend based on if they have your intended major and other important issues.
