The moving industry in the USA was deregulated with the Household Goods Transportation Act of 1980. This act allowed interstate movers to issue binding or fixed estimates for the first time. Doing so opened the door to thousands of new moving companies to enter the industry. This forced an incredible amount of competition and soon movers were no longer competing on services but on price. As competition drove prices lower and decreased what were already slim profit margins, rogue movers began hijacking personal property as part of a new moving scam.

There are many versions to the moving scam but the basic scam takes place as follows. A prospective client contacts a moving company and requests a cost estimate. In today's market this often happens online via moving directories or brokers. These moving brokers are salesmen prone to quoting "low ball" prices with no room for the movers to provide a quality service.

Once the scam moving company has secured a move by providing a non binding estimate they arrive to pack and deliver the goods. Often the scam movers use deceptive pricing or weight measurements including prices based on cubic feet of space used in the moving truck. After packing and loading, the client is informed that their goods went over the expected cubic foot allotment and "reserved space" in the truck was used which will now have to be paid for at a substantially higher rate. Often rogue movers will not inform a client of these discrepancies until the client's goods are in transit. The new price rates may be four or five times higher than the original estimates. The scam movers know that most people will be forced to pay these exorbitant rates based on their need for the personal effects (which may now be anywhere).

Currently the moving industry in America is overseen by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), part of the U.S. Department of Transportation. Only a small staff (fewer than 20 people) is available to patrol thousands of moving companies, making enforcement difficult.

Victim of moving company scam-Holding my stuff hostage and only want cash!?
Q. 1/7 my stuff picked up by moving company (BBB certified) in PA, had binding order of service with quote in email. They packed stuff, offered me boxes for "a couple dollars" and once it was packed & on truck they charged double the quote & $500 for a few boxes! My job went from $1400 to $2800. I figured I would just call the main office to deal with it. I start calling the base office in NJ to debate some of the charges and the final price because I really didn't have much stuff. I left several messages w/no return calls, month goes by still no stuff-finally threatened lawyer involvement and they called me back the other day, they claimed my phone wasn't working & that they called (bs) but got no answer, had my email too, guess that didn't [cont.]

A. See a lawyer today. You are not totally clear here, but I think you need to pay the $950 to the storage and get your stuff. Then, you turn around and sue the moving company for breach of contract and reimbursement of the storage fee. This sounds like a small claims case to me. No lawyer will do this for nothing. Go to a lawyer, pay for the hour of advice and then take action in small claims. Good luck.

Is there a scam free work from home online program that does not require payment to start?
Q. I recently moved to Pensacola, FL, and I'm 8 months pregnant, planning to be a stay at home mom. I'm looking for a way to bring more income into our home, so we're not living paycheck to paycheck off of my husband's E1 military budget. It seems like every "scam free" work from home online program I've looked into requires that you pay money to start, which indicates to me that it's a scam. Does anyone have any ideas?

A. Its what I do and it's worked out pretty well. What you have to do is complete surveys and offers for companies that want the public's opinion. No payment from you is ever required, not to sign up, not EVER. The sites don't get paid directly from you, but when you complete an offer or survey, they also get paid a small portion of what you earned yourself. For example, if you complete a survey about computers let's say, you would earn maybe $2 and the web site itself would recieve $0.50 from the company also for getting you to complete the survey. These surveys take little time at all, most taking up less than even 1 or 2 minutes of your time. They don t need any information other than your name, email address and your home address. Does anyone know if RoomInvasion has decent rooms or is it a scam?
Q. Here is the website -- I'm interested in moving to NY, but this seems like it could be too good to be true.

A. :0) You said it - if it looks too good to be true, then it normally is! There is nothing concrete on this to say it is a scam, but the area of room rental is a typical scam artist's paradise. The website is very poorly made and the terminology exceptionally bad for a "legit" organisation It says that the website is made by Media 2DaCore - who don't exist! Then when you go to "testimonials - it says site under "renovation" - Very African English for a so called Florida/NY/LA based company. In fact most sections are under "renovation" which is not professional for a company with "6 years experience" Last but not least - they do not provide any company contact addresses and thus all in all I would say leave well alone! Has all the… [cont.]
